Amazon.com Review The Volume 2 Itty Bitty book light by Zelco is a welcome refinement of a great original. By scaling back the footprint of the clip, the size of the light's hood, and the heft of the materials, Zelco has made this lamp sleek, compact, and practically weightless. Though slightly less sturdy than the original, the Volume 2 is still bright and strong, great for fatigue-free reading in a darkened room. The bulb, mounted on an adjustable telescoping arm, switches on automatically when the arm is extended and off when it retracts. Clipped securely onto the cover of your book, it shines only on the pages, not on your sleeping bedfellow. With a battery pack for four C batteries, the Volume 2 includes an 8-foot connection cord, a heat-triggered safety fuse, and a spare bulb. Compatible Zelco AC adapters are also available. --Emily Bedard

Best book light, but get the "Hardcover" June 29, 2003 Don Hittle 121 out of 124 found this review helpful
I've tried virtually every book light, and so far this is the best all round. I tried one with an LED bulb, because the regular bulbs don't seem to last too long (perhaps burn hotter when using the AC adapter?), but the light from the LED was not sufficient for comfortable reading. It's also nice that the light and battery units are separate: makes it easier to clip to the book. The only problem is not with the product, but the fact that amazon.com is selling the "Paperback" version here, which does not include the AC adapter. The "Hardcover" version, that includes the AC adpater, is, at present, available at the same price or cheaper elsewhere. UPDATE 2008: The version that includes the AC adapter is available on Amazon at a lower price than this one (without adapter).
much better than volume 1 October 6, 2003 D. Roddick (Laramie, WY USA) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've seen a few reviews critical of the on-off pull-out switch, but I have not had any problem at all. I used the original ityy bitty booklight for years and, while it was better than heavier alternatives, I always had to try tightening the pivots but could never get the thing to stay in place. Volume two has no such problem: It stays in place and adjusts very well. If there is a better alternative out there I'd like to know about it. (NOTE: the new white LED camping headlamps seem like they would adapt for this purpose terrifically: they last so long that you wouldn't need to wrestle with the AC adapter cord, which is my main complaint with these book lights. Battery packs are too heavy and cumbersome, but the new LED's can use AAA batteries and last for 100+ hours.
Great light! January 24, 2005 Nighttime Reader (Bloomington, MN USA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've had the volume 2 for 3 years, I read every night before going to sleep. I LOVE it. It recently broke due to the wiring issues others have posted, and I seemed to have had to replace the bulb about once a year. Not unreasonable in my opinion for the steady use I put it thtough. I'm definatly going to buy a replacement.
The best booklight October 3, 2007 LINDA Riley (Shawnee, KS USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have used both the original and the volume 2 booklights for years. Both the original and the volume 2 are extremely light, so you won't notice any added weight when you pick up your book. While the original booklight is good, the volume 2 has more even light with better page coverage, does a better job of keeping the light on the page and out of your bed partner's eyes, less chance of burning yourself if you fall asleep without turning it off, and is more sturdy. The volume 2 switch is in the extension arm--the light turns on when you extend it. This is a better design from the standpoint of extended life and it's just cool. In addition, while the wire in the original tends to last me about 2 years, I have had the volume 2 for about 10 years and it is still working. Zelco definitely learned from their mistakes with the original when they designed the Volume 2. (I've used some of the other booklights; I've never found a better one.)
One more thing: the Volume 2 uses the same AC adapter as the original. Watch out that your adapter has plenty of air space around it; they tend to overheat without it. Inspect your adapter occasionally and if you see any signs of distortion in the outer cover, replace it immediately; you don't want to risk a fire.
Light Sleeper Rejoices!! February 11, 2002 29 out of 38 found this review helpful
This item is a true life-saver! As an extremely light sleeper, I (of course) have the luck to have an avid nighttime reader for a mate. The bedside light used to drive me CRAZY, but this product has made life easier for both of us. Money well-spent, without a doubt!
